What is the GAPA Foundation Scholarship?
The purpose of the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance (GAPA) Foundation Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to students in high school; undergraduate, graduate or professional school; or trade or vocational school who express activism in the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) and/or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities.

How much is the GAPA Foundation Scholarship?
The GAPA Foundation Scholarship is for the amount of $2000, and several $2,000 scholarships may be awarded in a calendar year.  In addition, our top applicant this year will be designated the recipient of the Donald Masuda Memorial Scholarship (co-funded by the Lacuna Giving Circle) and will receive an additional $1,000 for a total of a $3,000 scholarship award.

What are the minimum eligibility requirements for this scholarship?
You must a) be in the process of applying to, or b) currently attending a post-secondary undergraduate institution (college, university, community college or vocational school) or graduate institution. Applicants should have a strong history of activism within either the API and/or LGBTQ communities; however, applicants need not identify as either to apply. Preference will be given to those who identify as both API and LGBTQ.

OK, sounds great. How do I apply?
Eligible candidates must complete an application form, answer two short response questions, one essay prompt, and provide the following supporting documentation:

  • Current academic transcript(s)
  • At least one letter of recommendation from a teacher, school administrator, counselor, employer, or community leader highlighting community activism and leadership skills.

Candidates are encouraged to apply electronically, but may alternatively complete a copy of the application and submit it to us via email at

When is the deadline? And is there anything else I should know about the application process?

  • Application materials must be received no later than June 15, 2015, 11:59 PM PST.
  • If additional evaluation of candidates is necessary to determine final recipients, the scholarship committee may require a follow-up questionnaire or interview.
  • By early September, all applicants will be notified regarding whether or not they have been chosen as a scholarship recipient.

What does the process look like if I’m selected as a scholarship recipient?

  • Awards will be granted directly to recipient’s Financial Aid Office.
  • Recipient’s name and portions of the recipients’ application essays may be included in GAPA Foundation publications and reports.
  • GAPA Foundation will require the presence of the scholarship recipient at the Community Connections Event in San Francisco on October 17th, 2015, or alternatively, the submission of materials (e.g. video testimonial, poster, artwork, Hangouts session, etc.) to be presented at the event.

Can I apply again if I don’t receive a scholarship?

If you do not receive a scholarship, you may reapply in future scholarship rounds if you meet the eligibility requirements for that round.
